The selection of past Award Winners shows clearly the fields in which the Foundation wishes to be active: It will honour accomplishments of lasting value in the fields of science, art or social welfare linked to mountaineering and the Mountain World. Ethics, responsibility, safety, solidarity, freedom, emancipation (in the sense of freedom from prejudicial discrimination) and respect for nature are all relevant. The following extract from the address given by Dr. Silvia Metzeltin Buscaini, when thanking the Foundation for her Award in 1996, fully expresses the objectives of the Foundation:
